"Walls of Memory"
This multimedia project explores the captivating narrative of a multilayered and weathered wall situated in Monterrey, Mexico. Through a performance video, a series of ethereal paper works capturing the wall's hues as I wash it, and an array of abstract works inspired by the wall's organic and colorful shapes, this project aims to unearth the hidden history within the layers of paint on the wall, while also reflecting on the enduring struggles of the economy.
The project employs the metaphor of a wall as a repository of time, memory, and cultural transformation. The performance in the video transforms my act of wall cleansing into a ritualistic experience, unveiling the stories that time has etched into its paint layers. As water and paint merge, they create a visual narrative that unveils the passage of time, shifts in society, and historical events imprinted on the wall's surface. Aligned with the wall's transformation, the project contemplates the recurring economic challenges faced by the country. The wall becomes a visual representation of economic fluctuations, where layers of prosperity and adversity coexist. Through the lens of the wall, the project acknowledges the resilience of the Mexican people, who persistently navigate economic hurdles while retaining their cultural vitality and identity. To complete the performance, an installation of threaded patterns intricately interweaves within the wall's architecture. This intervention introduces a geometric language, creating a vivid contrast against the organic shapes found in the weathered layers of paint. The precision of lines, angles, and patterns achieved through the art of threading initiates a compelling visual dialogue. This intervention of the architectural space with the thread breathes new life into the wall's story, etching a fresh layer of meaning onto its enduring surface.
