Mental Narratives is a series that results from Villarreal’s research on mental process and its relationship to her artistic practice. In this series, she explores the dichotomy of learning and unlearning through photographic memory and children’s stories through the use of textile, embroidery, and paint. She questions learning experiences from a long-lost childhood and its reinterpretation as an adult. She pays homage to classic tales such as Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, the Tin Soldier, and the Hen that Laid Golden Eggs while she reinvents the narrative and turns it into playful speculation.
