Diary of the Recent Past is a series of thread portraits that gives us a powerful insight into the role of memory and how we deal with it. It serves as a critique of collective amnesia and its relation to historical events. It includes 100+ thread drawings on linen and recycled fabrics portraying masked individuals that have been part of my originating circles since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. It is a visual documentation of the era while touching on issues of sense of place, security, interconnectedness, memory, and fragility.
The Diary serves as an archival complement to the HOPEMASK community project I worked on in 2020 at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Diary of the Recent Past will culminate as an archival series of fiber works and a printed book to document the years of the Covid-19 pandemic.
